Supporters and patrons of Pertubuhan Rumah Kebajikan Seri Cahaya Pulau Pinang, with the support of Wawasan Open University, are organising a Charity Food Fair to raise funds towards the operations of the Home.
The food fair, featuring authentic Penang local, Malay and Indian vegetarian food, including treats like ais kacang and popiah, will be held at the Caring Society Complex from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, October 31st.
The event targets to raise RM100,000 for the operations of Rumah Seri Cahaya located at Permatang Damar Laut, Batu Maung. The Home currently houses 88 young kids, 15 single mothers, and 7 elderly ladies.

The organisers received a positive boost to their efforts with a mock cheque presentation for RM30,000 from philanthropist Dato’ Lo Chiew Hor during a press conference to announce the fair at the WOU main campus today.
Organising chairperson Wendy Ang said that the monthly expenditure of the Home presently exceeds RM10,000, and appealed for direct contributions to Pertubuhan Rumah Kebajikan Seri Cahaya as well as support for the food fair.
She commended T. Kaliamah, a former community district nurse, and Linda Gregory, a social worker, who used their own savings to rent a house in 1999 to provide food and shelter for underprivileged children.

Ang said the single-storey wooden house has become cramped and a new building is urgently needed. Earlier fundraising activities managed to raise money for the purchase of a piece of land nearby and to prepare and submit plans for the construction of a permanent building. She stated that another RM400,000 is still needed towards the construction of the Home, adding that they hope to begin construction soon as the local council has now approved the plans.
School of Foundation and Liberal Studies dean Prof Mogana Dhamotharan, representing WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Wong Tat Meng, said that WOU is pleased to participate in this “great endeavour” in line with its corporate social responsibility.
Meanwhile Puan Sri Sue Dhanarajan, who is part of the organising team, displayed to the media her hand-made eco-friendly shopping bags, handbags and other items which she would be selling at the fair in aid of the Home.

Also present at the press conference were Datin Irene Martin, patron of the Home and wife of Dato’ Loh, some members of the organising committee, and Kali and Linda, founders of the Home.
