Full-time students raise funds for baby?s heart

VISITORS BROWSE THROUGH BOOKS ON SALE AT CHARITY FAIR

The full-time students of WOU managed to raise a total of RM21,425 towards an operation to correct a congenital heart defect for a one-and-a-half-month-old baby.

This charity project was carried out by 48 full-time students from Year 2 as part of their Co-Curriculum activity. They had organised a food and book fair on March 15 & 21 at the main campus in Penang, as well as a charity dinner at a hotel in George Town on March 29. The WOU staff in Penang and from the other regional centres also supported the project through their generous donations.

The funds collected were used to help baby Nurul Husna Farhana Mohd Hassani undergo surgery that cost about RM60,000, at Gleneagles Hospital Penang on March 27. Nurul Husna was suffering from a congenital heart disease and her parents could not afford the surgery.

WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye presented a cheque for the total amount to Nurul’s parents, Mazni Md Isa and husband Mohd Hassani Yaakob, during a simple ceremony held at the private hospital today.

Prof Ho commended the students for “outdoing themselves” in raising more than their initial target of RM15,000. “What they did is very noble. I am really proud of them,” he added.

WOU School of Foundation & Liberal Studies Deputy Dean Jasmine Emmanuel, who is the supervising lecturer, also praised her students. “I applaud the spirit of empathy, compassion and community service among the students as they pushed themselves, not just for grades but to bring about a happy outcome, health-wise, for the baby.”
