In conjunction with the “The Life and Legacy of the late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu: A Tribute by Malaysians’ at the main campus, the Wawasan Open University library will hereafter be known as the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Digital Library.
At a simple, brief ceremony, the plaque bearing the new name of the library was jointly unveiled by Tun Lim’s son Chien Cheng, Wawasan Education Foundation chairman Dato’ Seri Stephen Yeap, Gerakan National President Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and WOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Wong Tat Meng.

In his speech prior to the dedication of the library in remembrance of his good friend and mentor, Stephen Yeap said that as an avid reader, Tun Lim liked to ‘find out all he can about topics and issues that interested him”. He said Tun Lim never lost his hunger for reading even after retirement or with the coming of the Internet.
“He learnt to become a savvy user of the Internet, accessing information from all over the world to satisfy his relentless quest for knowledge. For Tun Lim, there was always something new to read and digest every day to sharpen his acute intellect,” he said, adding that it was therefore appropriate to rename the library as such.
Over 300 people earlier attended the half-day speech tribute event, and many of them stayed back for the WOU library renaming ceremony and to view the photo exhibition on Tun Lim held at the foyer outside the library.

The exhibits chronicled the various stages of Tun Lim’s life – while at Gerakan, in the state government and at WOU, besides showing him with his family. Quotes from Tun Lim were also included, and the public got to see precious photos of him in the thick of party activities, and in the midst of discussions in planning the industrial development of Penang and the construction of Komtar and the Penang Bridge.
There were also rare individual photos showing Tun Lim with all the six Prime Ministers of Malaysia, from Tunku Abdul Rahman down to Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak – many of them taken while they were holding other Cabinet or government posts.
