The new full-time students were reminded to adopt and apply the core values of respect, honesty and gratitude as they embarked on their university journey at WOU.

In her welcome speech at the orientation held at the main campus today, WOU Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & Educational Technology) Prof Zoraini Wati Abas added: “Having mutual respect for one another is key to getting along in life. There is a need to instil a sense of gratitude, as well as to be honest in whatever you do.”
She elaborated that WOU is different from their previous experience within the school system, and hence the students must change their mindset and adapt accordingly. She advised them to attend lectures, do their assignments early, and not to procrastinate in studying for exams, adding, “You do your part, and we will do our part to help you graduate.”

Prof Zoraini also spoke on self-leadership in which she encouraged the students to take the lead in realising their own dreams. “Think about your dreams and what you need to do to succeed. Be your own leader and model yourself on successful people in order to graduate; to become the person you want and are meant to be.”
Earlier, Nur Sabira Mohamad Mydin, from Bayan Lepas, who recently enrolled in the Accounting (BBAC) programme, led the freshmen in the oath-taking ceremony. Among the new students was Pon Chun Huon, 20, from Ayer Itam, who is physically challenged and will be pursuing his Management degree (BBMG) at WOU.

Penang Regional Centre (PGRC) Director Ching Huey Ling was on hand to introduce her team to the new students. She delivered the good news that those who possess the required CGPA for their Diploma, STPM, Matriculation, Foundation and other entry qualifications to WOU will receive a RM2,000 bursary award, and requested them to convey this news to their friends.
The welcome session of the orientation was attended by the School of Education, Languages & Communications (SELC) Dean Prof Balakrishnan Muniandy and several Academic Advisors.

The freshmen were also briefed on academic matters, the ITS facilities, the learning management system Wawasan-i, and the library services.
A total of 45 new students have registered to date for the September 2019 intake, with the highest enrolment (28) recorded for the six programmes under the School of Business & Administration (SBA).
