WOU celebrates 3rd anniversary

The retro night fever was at an all-time high as WOU celebrated its third anniversary in a spirit of togetherness and fun. The anniversary party at the main campus also offered a sumptuous breaking of fast feast at 7.22pm for our Muslim colleagues.

With Lim Yao-han (Communications) and Kamsiah (Library) as emcees, the evening kicked off with a gyrating ‘YMCA’ dance by the Staff Recreational Club (SRC) and Corporate Communications. Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr Seah Soo Aun gamely joined in during their opening rendition. The ‘dance troupe’ came back later with an encore performance on popular demand.

The icebreaker table game to guess 21 short music clips was ably won by Registrar Yeong Sik Kheong’s team.

The talentime part of the night was hilarious with peals of laughter ringing throughout the majestic hall. The ‘Talent on Ten’ medley of dances by nearly the entire academics team – including deans Prof Chee, Prof Ho and Prof Mogana – grabbed the RM150 first prize. It was fun to watch the deans hanging loose and showing off their retro dance moves.

Corporate Communications came in second (RM100) for their ‘Days of WOUr Lives’ multimedia clip, and GSA third (RM75) for their ‘First Love of Aci and Nana’ dance. The ‘Dancing Queen’ performance by Finance and Registry saw Puan Sri Sue joining in the sway.  The Library presented the ‘Sizzling Bookworm’ dance, while the Penang RO duo presented a song.

For the karaoke competition, a few contestants took the stage to sing at the top of their voices. The notable champion was Patsy (ETP) who belted out Bon Jovi’s “Shot Through The Heart” to win RM100 cash. Johnathan and Yao-han of Corporate Communications won RM70 and RM50 for their respective rendition of a Chinese number and Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are’.

Earlier, outgoing WOU Vice Chancellor Tan Sri Emeritus Prof Gajaraj Dhanarajan and Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Wong Tat Meng delivered their informal speeches. Prof Wong lauded Tan Sri for his leadership and for taking WOU to where it is today.

Prof Dhanarajan said: “Three years is not enough to build a university, however I’d like to think we’ve achieved some considerable success. And like me, all of you should work here till you’re 70.” He suggested we find good supportive colleagues and great friends, adding “There’s never gonna be a perfect working environment; working environment is what you create!”

About 120 staff from the main campus and the regional offices attended the anniversary party organised by the Staff Recreational Club and Corporate Communications. Wawasan Education Foundation member Loo Choo Teng and his wife also took time to grace the function.
