WOU participation in inter-varsity sports championship

Wawasan Open University took part – for the very first time – in the northern zone inter-varsity sports championship held at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) Penang branch campus, Tanjung Bungah, from February 27th to 29th.

Nineteen on-campus learning (OCL) full-time student players brought pride and recognition to WOU despite missing out in winning any medals. It was their first meet against more seasoned teams from other universities and they trained long and hard, giving their best as they represented the University.

The tournament, ‘Kejohanan Sukan Masiswa Zon Utara 2016’, was organised by the Ministry of Higher Education in collaboration with Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia (MASISWA) and TAR University College.

Altogether 16 private institutions of higher learning from the northern region participated, including TAR UC Penang, Stradford International College (SIC), Penang Skills Development Centre, Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Alor Setar, and Quest International University Perak

WOU participated in three events, that is, basketball, table tennis and futsal, out of the total eight in the championship; the others were chess, netball, bowling, volleyball and badminton.

Kevin Tan Pooi Soo, OCL student body advisor and Lecturer-in-charge of social recreational activities for OCL students, remarked, “Our futsal players, though plagued with injuries, fought gallantly and lost to the giants. Cheers and well done to our OCL student players. They played their hearts out to carve a name for WOU.”

He continued, “I congratulate every student player. Their team spirit was clearly evident. They were courageous in their playing and gracious in defeat.”

Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye commended Tan and the OCL student players “for carrying WOU thus far into the competition”.

This annual sports championship is organised with the aim of encouraging co-curricular activities among the students. It will be held in Ipoh next year.
