Wawasan Open University conducted a tea talk at Teik Senn (M) Sdn Bhd, Bukit Minyak, attended by 17 of their employees.

The briefing kicked off with a slide presentation by senior executive Lim Yeang See (Marcom) who gave an overview of WOU, its programmes as well as the facilities and support services available. She told them about the financial incentives, namely the rebate blitz and the WOU Study Grant, offered to new students.

Penang Regional Office assistant manager Teh Kim Kow explained in-depth about the flexible, affordable and accessible mode of open distance learning (ODL) at WOU which allows learners to study for higher qualifications while working. Questions were raised by the factory staff on how tutorials are conducted, the self-paced learning and entry requirements. Teh suggested that they visit the upcoming Open Day at the main campus on October 22nd and 23rd to enrol for studies.
The staff who attended the tea talk were all females; three had degree qualifications, six diploma and eight SPM holders. The employees were from the administration, accounts and HR departments.

Chief Operating Officer of Teik Senn, Cher Chen Chiang, shared that he encourages the employees to further their education since the company gives priority to internal promotion before opening up positions for external job applicants. He said they consider the academic qualifications on top of their work experience before awarding promotions.
Meanwhile the HR Manager, Lim Geok Suan, informed that the kind of WOU programmes more suitable for the staff were those from the School of Business and Administration.
The factory’s head office, with a total headcount of 20, is located in Penang while the branch office in Shah Alam, having a bigger workforce, is mainly involved in merchandising and accounts. WOU is planning to conduct a similar talk at the branch office in Shah Alam.
Teik Senn started out as a family business but has grown to become a successful distributor of numerous branded consumer products, such as canned fruits, snacks, assorted cookies, sparkling drinks and juice, and cling wraps/foil to hypermarkets, supermarkets, wholesalers, retail outlets, bakeries, restaurants and hotels.
