Wawasan Open University welcomed the third batch of On Campus Learning (OCL) full-time students during the orientation held at its main campus in Penang today. Out of the eight students enrolled for the May 2014 semester, five are in Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Management and three in Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Accounting.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Ho Sinn Chye gave the new students useful tips to start their education journey at WOU. “First, form and maintain small study groups which consists of three to four in a group. Then, get to know your Academic Advisors and seek their guidance and finally make full use of the Internet-based learning WOU has created for you. Also remember to get yourself familiarised with WOU’s learning management system, Wawasan2u.”

WOU’s Penang Regional Centre (PGRC) head Teh Kim Kow introduced the Academic Advisors – Lum Li Sean, Lalitha Ramasamy and Loo Saw Khuan from the School of Business and Administration (SBA) – to the students during the opening session.
Freshman Sharfifi Azizi Sheikh Shariff, 21, from Permatang Pauh, Seberang Prai led in the oath-taking. Also present were Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic-ODL) Prof Madhulika Kaushik, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic-OCL) Prof Mohandas Menon, SBA Dean Prof N V Narasimham, Registrar Yeong Sik Kheong and lecturers from SBA, School of Foundation and Liberal Studies (SFLS) and School of Science and Technology (SST).
SHARFIFI LEADS IN THE OATH-TAKING BY THE NEW STUDENTS
The students attended briefings on WOU’s regulations and procedures, IT services and facilities, WOU learning management system Wawasan2u, library services, OCL programme details, and on managing campus life.
Sharfifi opted for Management at WOU as he wants to explore and better understand the challenging management issues faced by business nowadays. “My mother works in Human Resources and she was very supportive of my decision to take up Management,” he said.
Another Management degree student, Nur Fatin Afifah Omar, 20, hopes to gain in-depth knowledge of the whole process of starting up and maintaining a business organisation. “My ambition, since three years ago, is to start my own business preferably a bakery. To make this a reality, I need to have a strong foundation in management and I am here at WOU to get as much knowledge as possible,” she elaborated. Fatin did her Foundation Studies at the Albukhary International University.

Using her STPM qualifications from Methodist Boys School, Penang, Leo Lay Pheng enrolled at WOU for her university degree. “I am taking Accounting because I‘m interested in a career in banking or audit,” said the 21-year-old who studied Accounts in her STPM. She finds university life totally different as things seem to be moving at a faster pace but so far she is “coping well”.
