Welcome aboard July 2018 ODL students!

Over 400 new part-time open distance learning (ODL) students of WOU from the July 2018 intake underwent orientation nationwide today.

SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES DEAN ASSOC PROF DR S NAGARAJAN WELCOMES FRESHMEN DURING THE ORIENTATION HELD AT THE MAIN CAMPUS.

The orientation was organised by the regional centres of Penang (PGRC), Kuala Lumpur (KLRC), Johor Bahru (JBRC), Kuching (KCRC) and Ipoh (IPRC), with PGRC followed by KLRC registering the highest enrolment.

Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Zoraini Wati Abas was on hand at KLRC to deliver her welcoming address.

PROF ZORAINI OFFERS SOME STUDY TIPS TO THE NEW STUDENTS.

A few senior academics represented the University at the orientation, where they read out Prof Zoraini’s speech, highlighted WOU’s ODL model and presented the Dean’s List awards. They were School of Humanities & Social Sciences (SHSS) Dean Assoc Prof Dr S Nagarajan (PGRC), School of Business & Administration (SBA) Acting Dean Prakash Arumugam (KCRC), SHSS Deputy Dean Jasmine Emmanuel (JBRC) and School of Science & Technology Deputy Dean (Academic & Quality Assurance) Assoc Prof Dr Lee Chee Leong (IPRC).

A total of 84 students were named to the Dean’s List for their academic excellence in the July 2017 semester. They comprised 32 from KLRC, 26 from PGRC, with the remaining from KCRC (11), JBRC (10) and IPRC (5).

The freshmen were also briefed on the WOU Care initiative that aims to support new students and keep them connected through the Moodle Mobile App, as well as on the ITS support facilities, student portal and learning management system.

At the Ipoh Regional Centre, Khoo Lingling, an Account Officer, who enrolled in the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Management programme, led the freshmen in the oath-taking ceremony. Student representative Julian Looi Po Weng, an Assistant Marketing Manager who is the second year of his Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons) programme, spoke on student life at WOU.

Looi was among the students present to receive the Dean’s List award from Dr Lee, while the others were Yeap Mei Shan, Lim Pui Shan and Seow Yim Ho.

Meanwhile at the orientation held in the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre, the freshmen were given a handbook on distance learning skills as part of the welcome pack to aid them on their ODL journey at WOU.

KLRC Senior Marketing and Admissions Executive Shahryl Abdul Latiff welcomed the students with a short introduction of WOU and Senior Marketing & Admissions Executive Raja Isaiah introduced the KLRC team that is now led by the newly-appointed Acting Head, Dr Mazlan Zainal.

Gyan Lama, who is pursuing his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Psychology at WOU, related his experiences as a student, while the oath-taking was led by Mohd Shariman Mustafar, a Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Management student. The event culminated with a Treasure Hunt to acquaint the students with the KLRC layout and facilities.

At the Penang Regional Centre, Assistant Engineer Mohd Hazlami Abdul Aziz from the Penang Development Corporation, who enrolled in Bachelor of Technology (Hons) in Construction Management, led in reciting the student’s pledge.

Alumni Su Woon Chui shared her student life experiences, and she seemed an ideal choice, having graduated in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Liberal Studies from WOU in 2014, before enrolling for her Master of Education degree and graduating again from the University in 2017.
