Government funds for WOU’s part-time students to study while working

(21-22 July 2018)

The part-time, open distance learning (ODL) students of WOU receive not only huge rebates on tuition fees and other incentives from the University but also have access to substantial education loans from the government.

In line with being a “people’s university”, WOU organised an Education Financial Assistance exhibition at the main campus on 21 and 22 July 2018 to further support its ODL student community.

THE PART-TIME STUDENTS OF WOU CHECK OUT THE GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE.

WOU’s students had the opportunity to inquire about the loan offered by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). The PTPTN loan is available for WOU’s part-time students and may be used to partially or fully cover the tuition fees of their diploma or first Bachelor’s degree programme.

The student applicants of WOU for the PTPTN loan must be Malaysian citizens aged not more than 45 years of age at date of application and they must have either received an offer or are currently pursuing a diploma or degree programme at the University. All WOU programmes are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and approved by the Ministry of Education, and therefore eligible for the PTPTN loan.

Effective January 2018, students approved for the PTTPN loan will receive up to a maximum of RM5,050 a year for a diploma, and up to RM5,470 per year for a Bachelor’s degree. The student must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 in the previous semester to continue receiving the loan.

A second PTPTN loan is allowed if the student has finished the programme or in the case of students who had stopped or failed in their studies, they must have settled their outstanding loan. The second loan is only given to students continuing tertiary education at the same or higher level of academic qualifications.

The exhibition also highlighted the Penang State Government Education Loan available for those pursing an ODL certificate, diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s degree or PhD programme at WOU.

THE PENANG STATE EDUCATION LOAN DRAWS INTEREST FROM THE STUDENTS.

Online applications can be made every year at http://www.penang.gov.my or http://epp.penang.gov.my, from June 1st to August 30th. The ODL applicants must be born in Penang or have at least 5 years’ schooling in Penang.

The successful students will receive an annual sum of RM3,000 for a Diploma, RM4,000/RM5,000 for a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Science, RM6,500 for Master’s and RM8,000 for a PhD.
