Wawasan Open University, in the spirit of community service, organised a blood donation drive in collaboration with Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre at its premises today.

Some 30 staff turned up to donate blood and another 20 took advantage of the free basic health screening provided, which covered a blood sugar test, and measurement of the body mass index and blood pressure.
The successful donors, about 18 of them, were given a special ‘thank you’ gift of a travel utensils package from the hospital. Most of them were first-time donors with Loh Guan Lye; however if they continue to donate four times successfully, the hospital will award them a laboratory test voucher (transferable) worth RM280.

A team of nine staff from the hospital, led by Dr Liew Chin Sien, conducted the blood donation campaign and health screening,
WOU’s Staff Recreation Club (SRC) president Dr Andy Liew highlighted that the aim of the blood donation campaign was to fulfill the University’s corporate social responsibility. “In our small yet significant way, we want to bless others as we give back to society through this campaign, and also we hope to create awareness that donating blood saves lives,” he added.

He thanked all the staff who took time away from their work schedule and stepped up to do their part for the community at large. A handful of brave first-time donors – Lee Siew Teng (GSA) and Cindy Tan (Chancellery) – managed to overcome their initial fear, thanks to the hospital staff who performed their tasks efficiently.
Dr Andy was happy with the overall participation of the staff. This blood donation drive is the third such campaign organised by WOU’s SRC in collaboration with government and/or private hospitals – the first in 2008 and second in 2011.
As for future projects planned, Dr Andy stated: “The SRC will endeavor to organise more activities to foster and strengthen the relations of our fellow colleagues and instill a sense of sharing, caring and giving.”
In the past, WOU’s SRC has organised charity drives to benefit welfare homes and the less fortunate.
